Strasbourg 8 October 2013: Mr Rudko Kawczynski, President of the European Roma and Travellers Forum (ERTF), met with Mr. Jean-Claude Mignon, the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), at the Council's headquarters in Strasbourg. Mr. Jean-Claude Mignon is also a member of the French National Assembly.
The increasing anti-Gypsyism in the member states, the ERTF Charter on the Rights of the Roma, the security of Roma and the establishment of an International Remembrance day for the Pharrajimos were the main topics of the discussion.
Mr Kawczynski said that one of the suitable solutions for the Roma issues would be establishing a Charter for the Rights of the Roma. Such a charter would improve the legal situation of Roma and would contribute towards obtaining specific rights adjusted to their situation, ensure cultural existence and create a political influence. Above all the Charter would prevent discrimination and segregation.
The ERTF President also informed Mr Mignon about other initiatives that the ERTF would like to implement in
cooperation with various committees within PACE.
The ERTF President said that he believes that some of these initiatives would lead to a short term and long term sustainable solutions for Roma.
At the end of the meeting Mr Mignon asked Mr Kwaczynski to continue the close relationship between the two institutions and he promised to look at the ERTF Charter on the Rights of the Roma and find ways of supporting this initiative.
