Strasbourg 18 September 2013: The European Roma and Travellers Forum (ERTF) and the International Roma Women's Network (IRWN) jointly presented a Position Paper at the 4th International Roma Women's Conference "Acting Now for an Equal Future" which took place on 16 and 17th September 2013 in Helsinki, Finland. The conference was organised by the Finnish Government and the Council of Europe.
The Position paper was a result of the discussions from the working groups on Roma Women and Elderly established at the 2013 Plenary Assembly of the European Roma and Travellers Forum. The ERTF and IRWN were calling on Roma women to work together for the improvement of their status in society and for the welfare of the community.
The Position paper recognise the role of the Romani women in bringing changes within and outside their communities and in mobilising forces in favour of the education of their children, both boys and girls. Furthermore it reflects on challenging traditional practices that are considered being contradictory to fundamental rights norms, standards and principles.
Additionally they called upon member states of the Council of Europe, the European Union, the OSCE, UN and other international organisations to support and acknowledge the important role of Roma women's groups and organisations in breaking down the deeply rooted stereotypes. They have also asked the international organisations to provide Roma women
organisations and networks with a financial support. This is considered as a precondition for their empowerment which is the basis for building women's leadership.
The ERTF and IRWN urged the international organisations to join with Roma women non-governmental organisations and networks and funding sources to work toward a European Roma Women Strategy.
